Hong Kong will provide first class facilities for Equestrian Competition Horses at the Beijing Olympics
The committee organising equestrian events for the 2008 Olympic Games say horses will have world class accommodation and welfare arrangements at the venues in Hong Kong.
The Good Luck Beijing – HKSAR 10th Anniversary Cup Olympic test event is soon to be held to try out the facilities.
John Ridley, Head of Racing Operations of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, has been responsible for building venues and facilities.
Some construction points he mentioned were:
- environmentally-friendly and recycled materials used in construction;
- air-conditioned stables and lighting with 30% energy savings;
- Electric fans and an exceptionally high roof ensure a breeze-like circulation of air;
- Horse stalls from recycled bamboo.
New equine clinic adjacent to the stabling complex has:
- Two examination rooms and a dedicated dispensary;
- 10 observation stables and latest diagnostic equipment;
- equine ambulances to transport horses from Sha Tin venue to the Sha Tin hospital at Sha Tin Racecourse within five minutes;
- air-conditioned floats for transporting horses to and from the airport.
