Joan Irvine Smith sues Richard J. "R.J." Brandes over Oaks Blenheim Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park
Joan Irvine Smith, the founder of the 120 acre Oaks Blenheim/Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, is suing Richard J “R J” Brandes the business partner who helped create the facility.
In the lawsuit Joan Irvine Smith claims that Brandes diverted $6 million - to other companies under his control - after they formed a partnership in 1998 to develop a world class West Coast equestrian centre.
“The complaint speaks for itself,” said Smith, the great-granddaughter of James Irvine, who established the sprawling Irvine Ranch.
Richard J Brandes, the former chief executive of a major national real estate finance company Belgravia Capital Corp, was unavailable for comment.
Despite the high profile success of the center, site of Olympic trials and a magnet for the powerful and famous, largely through the efforts of avid horse rider and nationally known Joan Irvine Smith, the center continued to lose money.
